Crazy For You
Tuesday 1st March to Saturday 12th March, 2011
at Theatre Royal, York
York Light Opera Company will be performing CRAZY FOR YOU at the Theatre Royal, York in from 1st - 12th March 2011.
When it was first produced on Broadway the “new” Gershwin musical comedy, CRAZY FOR YOU was the quintessential musical – one where everyone dances and anything on hand is used to make music. The plot was nothing new, having been adapted from the 1930s musical, Girl Crazy, but with an energetic cast, a touch of outrageously funny humour, colourful costumes, great scenery and one of the best musical scores of the 20th Century – who could ask for anything more?
CRAZY FOR YOU played for 1,622 performances on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre starring Harry Groener and Judi Benson, and won: 3 Tony Awards for Musical, Choreography and Costume Designer. 3 Outer Critics Circle Awards for Broadway Musical, Choreography and Set, Costume and Lighting Design. 2 Drama Desk Awards for Musical and Choreography.
The verdict of the New York Times critic Frank Rich when the musical was released: “A riotously funny show, uncorking the American musical’s classic blend of music, laughter, dancing, sentiment and showmanship with a freshness and confidence rarely seen".
As for the story – Bobby Child a banker, banished from New York by his father to a family-owned ranch, where – it is hoped – Bobby will mend his ways and become a more responsible person.
He travels West to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre, a 1930s playboy, who’s dream in life is to dance, quite out of place in a small Western Town.
Stage-struck Bobby falls in love with Polly Baker. But if he forecloses he will lose Polly, so he convinces her to put on a show that will pay of the debt her father owes on the theatre. To keep the plot going there are mix-ups and misunderstandings, disguises and improbable appearances, but eventually, everything is happily resolved, and Polly and Bobby are reunited.
Add this fun story to a fantastic memorable Gershwin brothers’ score, which includes I Can’t Be Bothered Now; Bidin’ My Time; I Got Rhythm; Naughty Baby; They Can’t Take That Away From Me; But Not For Me; Nice Work If You Can Get It; Embraceable You and Someone To Watch Over Me.
It’s a high energy comedy which includes mistaken identities, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music.
NOT TO BE MISSED!
Tickets will be on sale from the Theatre Royal box office or website from 8th November 2010. Ticket have been held at last year's prices!
